Chapter Eight

Sean tossed aside the weekly news magazine he had been trying to read, shoved out of his chair in the town house living room, shot back the sleeve of his black turtleneck shirt and checked the time yet again. Just past noon, he noted with a disgruntled sigh.

He found himself wishing, as he had all morning, that he’d been a lot more insistent about chauffeuring Charlotte to New Orleans. Then she would be with him already instead of still on her way. Of course, he would have had to make the trip down to Mayfair the previous afternoon, and that, in turn, would have meant that they would have had to spend the night together, one place or another.

Considering the angry accusations—Charlotte’s—and the hurt feelings—his—that had flared between them the last time they’d slept under the same roof almost three weeks ago, Sean had been more than a little gun-shy about even suggesting it. Especially when Charlotte had made a point of telling him that she had accepted Ellen Herrington’s offer of a ride to New Orleans.

Ellen had wanted to see them off, Charlotte had explained. He would also be saved the long drive to and from Mayfair just a day before they were scheduled to begin a longer, even more tedious journey, first to Frankfurt, Germany, then on to the Kazakhstan city of Almaty.

Though not exactly to Sean’s liking, he’d agreed to go along with the plan that had apparently already been made to Charlotte’s satisfaction. He hadn’t wanted to rock the boat. They were going to be sharing a hotel suite in Almaty for the next four weeks—the one-bedroom suite he had requested because they were supposed to be happily married. He could think of nothing worse than getting off on the wrong foot with his wife before they’d even left the country.

Well, nothing except missing their flight altogether, he amended as he headed for the kitchen, although they didn’t have to check in at the airport for their flight until three o’clock.

Now that it was past noon, Sean figured he could justify drinking a beer, and even if he couldn’t, he was going to do it anyway. He filled the frosted glass he took from the freezer with icy brew, found the can of cashews he’d stashed in the pantry and sat on a stool by the island counter.

Telling himself that he didn’t have to start worrying about Charlotte for at least another hour, he tried to rein in his impatience. The worst that could happen was that they’d be forced to take a later flight, and that would be Charlotte’s screw-up, not his.

He wouldn’t lose any of the good-guy points he’d gained over the past few weeks unless he allowed his annoyance to show. Since he was already mellowing out thanks to the beer he was drinking, he doubted that was likely to happen.

Sean hadn’t actually seen Charlotte face-to-face since he’d left Mayfair in a huff three weeks ago, unless he counted the few minutes they’d spent together on a recent Saturday.
